Description
INDIVIDUATION BEYOND THE INDIVIDUAL: A JUNGIAN EXPLORATION OF THE RELATIONAL FIELD
Because Jung tended to pay a great deal of attention to the inner dynamics of the psyche, individuation is primarily thought of as an intrapsychic process – even within the analytic process. In this talk Mark Saban wants to challenge this assumption by focusing on the relational field as a “third” arena that transcends and includes the individuals concerned. He will provide clinical examples to indicate how this field shows up as an autonomous – highly affective – entity and will conclude by developing the notion of transindividuation – a process that not only takes us beyond the idea of the individual but that also opens up the possibility of a collective and psychosocial individuation.
Mark Saban PhD trained with the Independent Group of Analytical Psychologists, with whom he is a Senior Analyst, working in London and Oxford. He is also the director of the MA in Jungian and Post-Jungian Studies in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex.
