Recent events have not only unveiled chronic inequities but also heightened the visibility of these injustices and their impact particularly in Black Asian, African and ethnic minority communities. Now more than ever psychotherapists and counsellors must work with their clients in processing these ‘external’ issues presenting with increasing frequency in their internal worlds and in consulting rooms.
This workshop aims to help practitioners with:
- Engaging with, and understanding how, terms such as: institutional racism, internalised domination, oppression, inferiorisation, operate in the therapeutic setting.
- Enhancing participants’ self-awareness, empathic knowledge and understanding of other cultures and conceptualisation of identity formation.
- Exploring their own processes, whether from dominant or minority groups, to be more attuned to the intercultural dynamics in therapeutic engagements with their clients.
- Allowing for a commentary on how cultural competency can be applied in supervision. It will therefore look at the experience of supervision from both angles, as a supervisee and as a supervisor.
Workshop Leader
Baffour Ababio grew up in Ghana. He is a psychoanalytic intercultural psychotherapist in private practice and clinical supervisor at Nafsiyat Intercultural Therapy Centre. Baffour completed his training at University College London and the Guild of Psychotherapists and is a member of UKCP and BAPPS (British Association for Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Supervision). Alongside his clinical role, Baffour developed a career in managing mental health services integrating a community-based response to support recovery from a broad range of mental health problems. With Roland Littlewood he has co-edited a volume on intercultural psychotherapy entitled Intercultural Therapy: Challenges, Insights and Developments (2019).
Target Audience:
This workshop is designed for counsellors, psychotherapists and mental health practitioners who are engaged in client work.
