How we marked The Big Listen: The Samaritans Awareness Day 2024

On 24 July this year, we marked 'The Big Listen', Samaritans Awareness Day. This awareness day allows those in the mental health sector and general public to spotlight the important work done by the Samaritans and also, the power of listening in a mental health setting. We wanted to highlight the work done by the Samaritans and also think about listening, and the power of listening, in a psychoanalytic context.

The Samaritans

The Samaritans is a volunteer organisation that offers listening and support to those who are struggling to cope. Every 10 seconds a Samaritan responds to a call for help which can be via an in-person visit, call, text or email. At the core of the Samaritans' mission is listening, they believe that "exploring feelings alleviates distress and helps people to reach a better understanding of their situation and the options open to them." At the BPC, we link to the Samaritans in the 'I need help now' section of our website as one of the invaluable mental health services that are free and available 24/7 for those in need of emergency support.
