Claire Appleton
Psychodynamic Psychotherapist
About Claire Appleton
I qualified as a clinical psychologist in 2001 having studied at the University of Newcastle. I have worked in a wide variety of settings within the NHS including older adults, health psychology, neuropsychology and tertiary mental health services.
I have substantial experience of working with older adults, those with chronic pain and long term conditions, individuals with neurological difficulties as well as those affected by a variety of mental health difficulties including anxiety, depression and trauma related problems.
I completed my training as a psychodynamic psychotherapist with the North of England Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists (NEAPP) in 2016 and have developed my own independent practice since then. I combine this with ongoing work in the NHS, teaching and training and facilitating Balint groups (a kind of case discussion group) for medics from a variety of backgrounds.
I am interested both in the direct application of psychoanalytic knowledge in the consulting room but also in applying psychoanalytic thought to a variety of settings, specifically in supporting NHS staff and others in the helping professions.
