Who is the course for?
Applicants must hold a recognised qualification in Counselling or Psychotherapy.
This course comprises of 12 study days and is aimed at helping students to think about counselling children and young people from a psychodynamic perspective. The course is relevant for:
- Experienced school / young person’s counsellors seeking to develop their practice and update their knowledge.
- Less experienced school / young person’s counsellors wanting to improve their skills and to develop their counselling practice.
- Graduate counsellors looking to take on work as a school counsellor / young person’s counsellor.
- Those working therapeutically with children and young people in an educational or community setting.
The study days are taught by clinical practitioners who are actively engaged in clinical practice with children, young people and families and who are involved in working in the school or further educational; setting; other settings with children and young people and consultancy to schools.
Aims
The course aims to offer an introduction to psychodynamic approaches to children and young people in educational and community settings and an understanding of the role and place of a counsellor within such settings.
It will offer the opportunity to discuss and learn about a theoretical overview of psychodynamic theory in working with children and young people; an understanding of child development research in relation to the emotional development of children and young people, and a psychodynamic view of personality development from infancy through to late adolescence and the transition to young adulthood.
Teaching components
The study days run from 09:30 – 16:30 and include two theoretical seminars, a work discussion group and an experiential group.
