Northern Ireland Psychoanalytic Society

The Northern Ireland Psychoanalytic Society (NIPaS) is an organisation of psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists based in Belfast. Founded in 1988, it was originally called the Northern Ireland Association for the Study of Psychoanalysis (NIASP).

The name was changed in 2019 following our admission as a Study Group of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) in 2018. Study Group status means that we can now offer a full psychoanalytic training, having run a successful psychoanalytic psychotherapy training for almost thirty years. The Society’s ambition is to become a Component Society of the IPA in the next few years.

The Society has had charitable status from its early years, and acts on a non-profit basis. The fundamental aim of the Northern Ireland Psychoanalytic Society is to contribute to the improvement of the mental health and well-being of the citizens of Northern Ireland by fostering a psychoanalytic understanding of the mind and psychic development through education and treatment, clinical training and outreach, clinical consultancy and academic research to the highest international standards.
